Cars that run on propane. It's a bizarre thing. I have questions.

I’m currently eyeballing a couple of cars on the auction lot that runs on propane. They’re still the original engine blocks but retooled (programming and some mechanicals) to ensure propane combusts properly.

Does anyone here know of a mechanic in the Puget Sound area that has experience converting cars from Gasoline to Propane, and vice-versa? I’d like to get a professional’s opinion.

I don’t know of any mechanics, but I know it was popular to do that with the carbureted Toyota 4x4s back in the day, for offroading purposes. I know YotaTech used to have a good forum section about propane conversions. Lots of useful info.

Edit. Pirate4x4 had some stuff too, just mind your manners over there. Not an overly friendly group.

My daily driver has been converted to run on LPG. Which is a mix from propane and butane. It starts on gasoline and switches to LPG after a number of seconds. It was converted when new, it’s got 322k km (200k miles) now.

Here it is on the Nürburgring, last March:
